Lamborghini Gallardo Page 8
Superleggera LP 570-4- ‣ I'd just finished designing and cutting all the pieces that make up the roof, windscreen, and pillars. Here's a pic of them all laid out (minus clear plastic window parts). Now to glue it all together.
- ‣ Roof panels and pillars almost done.
- ‣ Most of the key rear frame and roof parts are done. All 5mm foamboard; 1000gsm cardboard; and 250gsm foilboard
- ‣ Starting to think about how the roof structures and panels will be constructed. At this stage just super roughly mocking a few pieces to aid my design process. Those aren't proper wheels either- just dummy mock ups at this stage.
- ‣ Front bumper assembly complete- except for the two main grill inserts. Looking pretty nice. Bumper is removable.
- ‣ Test fitting outer panels for font bumper. Lots of iterations required to get them fitting just right. Mocked up grill insert. Also thinking of having an opening front trunk lid.
- ‣ Developing all the substructure parts that form the front bumper assembly.
- ‣ Early test assembly of front fender, using shiny black 250gsm foilboard. Some gaps and lines need attention. Also starting to prototype the windscreen valance area with white 80gsm paper.
- ‣ Creating a template for the front fender outer skin, using white 80gsm printer paper.
- ‣ Designing and test-cutting pieces for the front fenders.
- ‣ Front end support structures taking shape. Also starting to very roughly mock up some roof pillar parts. Taking measurements from 1:18 scale die cast model and multiplying by four gives dimensions for my model.
- ‣ First proper build of center frame. Plus modifications to front sub frame.
- ‣ Early prototyping of the center frame structure, using cheap white cardboard. Dummy mockup wheels help to check proportions and clearances.
- ‣ Another angle of the front subframe. The holes in the brake rotor were made with a confetti punch.
- ‣ Front sub frame, front differential, sway bar, upper and lower sway bars, uprights, steering rack, brake callipers, and brake rotors all finished. All made from foamboard, cardboard, paper, drinking straws, and toothpicks.
- ‣ Finished front sway bar. Made from drinking straws, foamboard, and 210gsm cardboard.
- ‣ Version 2 of the front differential. Slightly larger than the first build. About 115mm in length. Toothpicks and BBQ skewers for bolts! Inset shows differential from real car.
- ‣ First complete prototype of the front differential/transmission. Made with layers of 5mm foamboard and 219gsm cardboard. Inset pic shows differential from the real car. This actually turned out to be a bit small relative to the chassis, so I built a new version.
- ‣ Black plastic drinking straws for front drive shafts. 1:18 scale die cast Lamborghini model chassis in the background that I use as reference... which turned out to be quite inaccurate in detail, so I reference lots of pics of the real car sourced online.
- ‣ Prototyping and construction of the front subframe continues. Upper and lower control arms are looking good. Plus a first build of the front differential is complete.
- ‣ Earliest photo I have of the Gallardo build. The chassis is made from several layers of foam board and 1000gsm poster board, glued together. I then built up, starting with the front sub-frame. There was a very long journey of scratch building thousands of parts ahead...
